Little

The appeal of the small dog had always eluded me. They always seemed to lack substance. Lately, however, I have noticed how many of them appear to be puffed up. It’s not just their fur but also their manner. They tend to let their presence be known.

This can be charming.

Inside Out

Inside Daisy Clover on TCM

Among its fascinations, is the fact that Inside Daisy Clover is set in a carney strip. Daisy, on her 15th birthday, introduces us to Angel Beach where barkers and psychics preside over the boardwalk.

A role for Barbra or perhaps Debbie Reynolds or more especially Doris Day belongs to Natalie Wood. Make no mistake, she owns it completely. But it is a strange and unusual part for her.

Odder still is Daisy’s mother (Ruth Gordon.) Gordon was nominated for an Oscar and won the Golden Globe for her portrayal.

Daisy has an escape plan. She makes a record at one of the stands and sends it to Swan Studios.

Raymond Swan (Christopher Plummer) is not as impressed as his wife Melora (Katherine Bard) by the waif. Still he sees a way to turn Daisy into America’s Little Valentine.

Wade Lewis (Robert Redford) comes close to destroying that project but it’s really Daisy’s rebellious and free nature that makes his project fail.

J’accuse

Fingers are being pointed at the wrong side of the aisle.

Welfare cheats? Volleyball anyone? Brett Favre soon may not be remembered for his NFL passing records but rather for diverting government welfare funds to build a stadium. His MAGA affiliation with former Gov. Phil Bryant [R] made the scheme seem so fool-proof.

Sex trafficking, that’s falling on the R side with Gaetz still walking free. Not to mention, oh forget it, there’s too many good old boys just being boys to mention.

Law and order is big on the R agenda yet they sanction insurrection. Police are a sacred cause on the right, yet their J6 riot beat on police trying to protect the Capitol.

We know hypocrisy is a bipartisan activity, of course, but let’s heed the expression that involves “glass houses.” Shall we?

A kingdom for a horse

Every home is a castle, isn’t it?

For me it’s simply that I don’t get this Royals thing at all. I have no quarrel with those who feel saddened over the passing of Queen Elizabeth. I understand mourning the loss of a complete stranger just.. because.

Obviously on some level we all knew her. She was not your friend’s mum but a public figure. Many of us probably felt we knew her better than we do Roy from the corner grocer, for instance.

What I am questioning is the institution Elizabeth II represents. I actually find the wealth His Majesty King Charles III amassed appalling. Doesn’t it smack of some underhandedness? Don’t these titular rulers also collect salary from the British public?

The newly anointed King was rather a schlubbish fellow until last week. His public/private life had some unpleasant elements, even whiffs of scandal, while his general usefulness could easily be impugned.

If Charles was in fact an enterprising chap all along, I beg pardon. I am not a close Windsor watcher so forgive me if I am wrong about any of this.

This anti-democratic moment

A distorted mirror

We live in interesting times. That is the ancient curse brought upon us clearly through a fault of our own.

Liberals have done as much to make it transpire this way as the right-leaners who seem to disdain democracy. Let’s address my camp, the lefty tribe, first in finding what went wrong.

Something certainly did, go wrong, that is, for this great nation to be so dangerously divided. The middle ground wherein lies compromise has been so thoroughly compromised as to be nonexistent.

Liberalism created the “there are no losers” nonsense that suggests that noone is wrong. It espoused the suggestion that you and I might have different realities. You know, man, ’cause it’s all relative.

Talk about opening the door to specious argument. Come on in, alt-facts.

Your alternate reality is as good as my science-backed reality. ‘Cause, you know man, it’s all relative. Nobody loses. Everybody is a winner.

Bingo along comes the Big Lie, and TFG wants to claim his prize.

And, as long as we are so flexible about facts, let’s reimagine a democratic republic in which law is not respected. People’s rights don’t have to be granted. We don’t have to vote if that, you know, bothers you.

Let’s get armed thugs to overrun our political bastions. Let’s empower those who wish to overthrow democracy to do so “legally.” Let’s trade security for influence.

And since all things are equal, let’s bend the truth til it breaks. Let’s break justice til it bends. Give the insurrectionist-in-chief the keys to his kingdom.

It’s all relative, man. Nobody’s wrong. We’re all cool.

TFG

There is a real danger in giving this maniacal insurrectionist a forum and a platform.

An NYT writer feels that Biden didn’t make the ex-prez “small” enough by declaring against the threat to democracy he poses.

I contend that the press and the people did not take him seriously enough the first time around. We of the liberal persuasion laughed at his antics. Ha, who’s laughing now!

Pen to paper

Thursday, September 8th is International Literacy Day. It is also, appropriately, the first day of public school for New York City’s youngsters. The mantra in my day was “Stay in school and graduate.”

I cannot imagine my life without the tools of literacy. There are ways of getting information that don’t involve the written word, of course.

Radio, television, and just plain old-fashioned conversation are still available but communication through books, newspapers and magazines would feel like a loss.

I would also miss the enormous opportunity that being able to jot down my thoughts and opinions provides. Literacy is that opportunity. Illiteracy is a deprivation.

UNESCO reports that some 771 million people- from the young to adults- lack basic knowledge in reading and writing. This makes awareness of International Literacy Day that much more urgent.

Times Square will get new signage. It has been declared a “gun free zone” making carrying firearms in the area a felony.

“Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall.” Mikhail Gorbachev died at the age of 91 on August 30th.

In Pakistan there have been 5 times normal levels of water. Jackson, Mississippi is suffering from dangerous floods. The Pearl River crested at perilous heights the other day. If the end is neigh, it will end in flooding. My prediction.

Cocaine was smuggled into the U.S. in packages of baby wipes. Over 1500 pounds were secreted into some 1900+ packs of baby products. For those accustomed to hearing of coke in kilos, that’s about 700 kilograms. The dollar value? 11.8million.
